Mark 1 35-39 RE-L-Ying Prayer

 Sticky Note:  RE-L-Y

The opposite of being a Christian is self-reliance.  A barometer of whether we are relying on ourselves or relying on God is the presence or absence of relying prayer that we practice.

RE-L-Ying Prayer is...
REtreating Prayer -- get away from distractions and spend time alone with God

Listening Prayer -- take time to be still and listen.  He speaks with us, but we have to turn off the noise so we can hear

Prayer that says Yes -- when He speaks, do what He says

How is this kind of prayer even possible for us?
-because Jesus retreated to His Father in prayer, He listened, and He said yes on our behalf.  And it led Him to the Cross.  He is the perfect pray-er.

More (if you want it)

Are "distractions" always bad things?  Distractions are most often GOOD things (ie family members, friends, work, sleep, hobbies, etc) but they are not Ultimate things.  When we spend little or no time alone with God, we have elevated those good things to ultimate status.  Let's take steps to repent of that.

Aren't we supposed to "pray without ceasing"?  Yes!  But Jesus got alone with His Father, and we need that, too.

Does it have to be in a room where I live?  Jesus wasn't in a house; he was out in the wilderness.  Maybe take a walk by yourself, somewhere where you can pray and sing out loud.

What if I don't feel like being alone with God?  There's a joy in hearing His voice that once you've experienced it, you'll feel like doing it a lot more.  So do it by faith.

What if I've tried this, and He doesn't seem to be speaking to me?  Keep listening.  That's faith.
